Golden Rule # 4: Don’t skip breakfast.

I know you have heard it before, but breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You start your metabolism the moment that you eat something; therefore, you should eat breakfast within 30 minutes of getting up in the morning. The longer you go without eating, the longer it takes for your metabolism to kick in.

Most people think that by skipping meals they are actually skipping calories, but when you skip meals, especially breakfast, your body goes into starvation mode and begins to hold and reserve fat in your body. That is why it becomes difficult for those who skip meals to lose weight.

If you are not used to eating breakfast, try a protein smoothie that you can make at home with frozen mixed berries that are low in calories and high in fiber. You can include a leafy green such as kale, which is an anti-inflammatory, a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and supports the metabolism to promote weight loss. Then add a splash of V-8 VFusion Light and your choice of protein mix, and blend it together. Protein at every meal is important—read Golden Rule #14 to learn why.

Another great option for you non-breakfast eaters could be a breakfast biscuit such as BelVita and juice or coffee. I started eating BelVita breakfast biscuits over a year ago because they are whole grain, low in sugar, delicious and individually packaged so you can take them on the go. BelVita breakfast biscuits are available in five different assortments: golden oat, apple cinnamon, chocolate, blueberry and cinnamon brown sugar. You also may want to consider grabbing some nuts, such as almonds, pistachios or walnuts, to eat with your BelVita breakfast biscuits. Nuts are also a great source of protein.
