Thursday's Tip: 10 Ways to Improve Your Memory

Memory is actually the result of a complex biochemical process in the body so it is important to live a healthy lifestyle to keep our memory in tiptop condition.

Below are 10 ways to help boost your memory.

  1. Reduce your intake of inflammatory foods. Refined sugars and processed foods (trans fats) are the most common causes of inflammation in the brain.
  2. Eat more antioxidant-rich foods. Antioxidants protect the body against oxidation damage. Eat more citrus fruits and dark leafy greens.
  3. Get more Omega-3 in your diet. Omega-3 is important for brain function.  Good sources of Omega-3 are found in cold water fish and in plants sources such as chia seeds, walnuts and broccoli.
  4. Stay away from unhealthy fats. Trans fats and saturated fats found in animal protein are associated with worsening the overall cognitive function and memory over time.  Instead eat healthy monounsaturated fats found in olives, avocados, nuts, coconuts and ghee.
  5. Eat foods rich in resveratrol. Resveratrol is a flavonoid found in things like grape juice, red wine, cranberry juice, peanuts, fresh grapes, and berries.  Studies show resveratrol had a significant impact on the ability to remember words and increase function of the hippocampus – the area of the brain involved with the formation, organization and storage of memory.
  6. Get some physical exercise. Exercise improves circulation and produces mood-boosting chemicals.
  7. Try to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. Sleep deprivation makes it difficult to recall important information.
  8. Make meditation a daily part of your routine. Daily mediation trains your brain to form new neural pathways.  People that meditate have a larger pre-frontal cortex in the brain that regulates equanimity and happiness. can also improve deductive reasoning and reduce anxiety and depression to help improve healthy memory function.
  9. Learn something new. Learning something new keeps your brain functioning well.
  10. Foster an active social life. Meaningful interactions with others keep our brains strong and healthy.  Studies show that people with an active social life are less likely to develop dementia.

Help keep your memory working for you by giving your brain the proper fuel and the proper environment to help it thrive.
