Thursday's Tip: How to Get a Good Night's Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep allows the body to regenerate, grow, replenish hormones and balance and repair any of the damage of the day.  Our brains and muscles also need time to rest and repair.  The following are some suggestions to help you ease you into getting a good night’s sleep.

Keep the room dark.  Electronics put out damaging light that disrupts sleep and cause cellular and ocular damage over a prolong period of time.  Keep electronics away from you bed.  Use black out shades if too much light comes in through your window.

Keep the bedroom cool.  It is hard to get a good night’s sleep when you feel too hot.  Keep the bedroom a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house.  Use pillows and sheets that are made of natural fibers that breathe.

Establish a schedule.  Set a regular time to go to sleep and a time to wake up every day for 30 days.  Your body will be trained to know it is time to sleep.  Also, avoid reading, watching television or spending large amounts of waking time in bed.

Create a relaxation ritual.  Before going to bed, take a warm bath, do some deep breathing or some yoga stretches to help your mind shut down and relax.  Drinking a cup of herbal tea may also help you relax before going to bed.

Sleep is important for your longevity and quality of life.  Getting a consistent and high quality of sleep will keep you feeling great.

Remember to consult with your physician before making any changes to your health regime.
