Thursday's Tip: Live Long and Prosper with Ginger

Live Long and Prosper with Ginger

Adding ginger to your arsenal for living a vibrant and long life makes sense.  Ginger is not only good for cooking in desserts, vegetable, meat and fish dishes but also has great anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits.

Reasons to Appreciate Ginger:

Gingerol oil is the main compound in ginger that makes it effective in fighting off inflammation while also giving ginger its pungent aroma and spicy flavor.  Gingerol oil stops the production of the harmful free radicals called nitric oxide to inhibit inflammation.

Arthritis and other types of muscle pain are reduced and inflammation is inhibited in the joints and joint cartilage caused by inflammatory substances produced by the cells in your body.

Studies have also shown ginger to relieve fever and to possess antibacterial qualities. Research has demonstrated that ginger successfully wiped out ovarian cancer cells when exposed to ginger extract.  Ginger extract also eradicated tumors associated with colorectal cancer.

Pregnant women use ginger as an herbal remedy to prevent morning sickness and is also used by those who are susceptible to motion sickness or have nausea, vomiting or dizziness.  Besides calming down a stressed stomach, ginger can also be used to treat constipation.

Improving digestion is another health advantage to taking ginger.  Ginger stimulates the production of saliva to allow easier swallowing thus enhancing the movement of the gastrointestinal tract.

Adding Ginger into Your Life:

Ginger is available in powdered or fresh raw form.  Fresh raw ginger is best for medicinal purpose by preparing it into a tea or juice:

  • Make ginger tea by peeling the skin off the ginger root, cutting it into thin slices and boiling it in water.
  • Juice the ginger root by peeling off the skin and adding it into your juicer.

Add honey and lemon juice to make the tea or juice more palatable.  Drink the ginger beverage after meals or after a particular grueling exercise to ease joint and muscle pain.

Remember to consult your physician before adding any changes to your health regime.
