This month is the number 8, which is about Abundance, a nice thing to talk about starting a new year!  The result of loving (number 6) and serving (number 7) is Abundance.

As I’ve talked about before related to the Bagua, true abundance means a lot more than money, although that’s typically what people think of, and money is certainly a very important thing to have enough of in our lives!  Abundance begins within; a very rich person can feel abjectly alone and isolated in their world…let’s take Ebeneezer Scrooge as a good example (and suitable for this time of year!).  He was a miser in every sense of the word, until he was visited by visions of his life past, present and future.  This unique perspective helped him to realize that he could have a much better, more fulfilling and happier life by giving as well.  It was only when he was able to see this that his life turned around.

Now, most of us are far from Scrooge’s life, but I think we’d all benefit from a bit of fresh perspective on what our lives are really about.  Feng shui teaches balance in all things, and balance in abundance means giving as well as receiving.  One can be weighted down with money (job is going great, mortgage is almost paid off, car payment is done), but then it somehow begins to feel a bit off.  Have you ever given money to those bellringers who stand for hours outside grocery stores?  It wasn’t how much you gave that made you feel good, it was the act of giving something that made you feel better.  The reason you felt good was because you were coming more into balance with your world.

We have learned to become wary of charitable organizations lately, because only a portion of money received actually goes to the cause.  Don’t let this deter you from giving; find those with whom you resonate, organizations that you feel good about.  Try not to give just because it’s expected of you.   The best gift is given with love, and that’s what makes it so powerful, because both the giver and recipient feel it.  You know what it feels like if you’ve ever received a gift from someone who gave it in love, or if you’ve ever given a gift with love to someone – it just feels good!

So give love along with whatever else it is you’re giving, whether it’s money or preparing a meal. This is the feeling that brings things into balance.  It’s this feeling that truly makes the world go ‘round….and it’s “good feng shui.”  Many blessings to you and yours this new year!
