The scriptures teach us many lessons about tithing. We learn how much, how often, when, what frame of mind and what repercussions would occur if we do not tithe. For example, in Malachi we learn how much we should give when tithing.

Malachi 3:10

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”

Proverbs shares with us why it is important to honor God by giving back the first portion of our earnings.

Proverbs 3:9-10 ESV

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.”

In 2 Corinthians 9:7 ESV we learn that when we give our tithes, we should do so with a  positive spirit “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

And finally if we decide not to tithe, also in Malachi we learn what are our repercussions.

Malachi 3:8-12 ESV

“Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes  and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.”

The Act of Obedience

When I first started tithing it was challenging at first. Especially once I became unemployed. But I tithed even on my unemployment check. And what I learned from my obedience is from the moment that I first started tithing until I can no longer tithe is just how good God is. Because of His grace I have never needed anything. God has always met my needs no matter what. Most importantly my relationship with Him has grown. Learn more about my tithing experience in this video below.

Enjoy!
