Inspirational Wednesday: Spiritual Gifts – Teaching

Matthew 22:16

They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.

The spiritual gift of teaching can be a very rewarding profession, as a college professor I have enjoyed the honor of having this spiritual gift. When I think about who is considered our greatest spiritual teacher; the scripture noted above provides us with some indication – Jesus.

Jesus’ teaching style could be described as a compassionate conversationalist. He had the type of engaging magnetism that people were instantly drawn to. As He walked and taught people followed and absorbed His every word, His message, His lessons. Most of His teachings were conducted in parables to provide a deeper spiritual meaning to His teachings.

When we consider the qualities of a great teacher some of the following characteristic may come to mind…

  • Passion for Teaching
  • Love for their Subject
  • Knowledge of Subject
  • Encouraging
  • Supportive
  • Great Communicator
  • Great Rapport with Students

When you review the list above consider not only how this list reflects Jesus’ skills but perhaps how these qualities may resonate with you? Could you possibly possess this spiritual gift? Could you be the next great teacher, could you impart knowledge to just the right student to change the rest of their life?

Taking on the role of a teacher is more than just a blessing of receiving a spiritual gift, it is an incredible responsibility. In James 3:1 it states Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

Teachers are in a position to share knowledge. That knowledge can be used for good, or otherwise. Therefore we are in a position to be judged more strictly. However, for those of us who love what we do – the reward at the end of the day is worth it. When you see the sparkle in your student’s eyes, and hear the soft thank you’s that fill your heart. It is then that you know that your spiritual gift as a teacher is a true blessing.
